Diamond bypass ring in yellow gold, available in 9K, 14K and 18K

9K vs 14K vs 18K Gold: Which Is Best for Diamond Jewellery?

When you choose a diamond ring or nose pin, the diamond gets most of the attention. But the gold you choose matters just as much. It affects how the piece looks, how long it lasts, how comfortable it feels and, of course, how much it costs.

Most of our designs are available in 9K, 14K and 18K gold, and customers often ask us which one to pick. Here is a clear, practical guide.

What does karat mean?

Karat (K) tells you how much pure gold is in the metal. Pure gold is 24K, but it is too soft to hold diamonds securely, so jewellers mix it with other metals such as silver, copper and zinc. This mix is called an alloy.

Karat Pure gold content Hallmark fineness number
9K 37.5% 375
14K 58.5% 585
18K 75% 750
22K 91.6% 916

You may know 22K gold from traditional Indian jewellery. It is beautiful, but it is quite soft, which is why diamond jewellery is usually made in 18K or lower.

9K vs 14K vs 18K at a glance

9K 14K 18K
Colour Lighter, softer yellow Warm yellow Rich, deep yellow
Strength Hardest, most scratch-resistant Very good balance Softer, shows wear sooner
Price Most affordable Mid-range Highest
Value of gold content Lowest Medium Highest
Best for Budget-friendly daily wear Everyday rings, office wear Bridal, milestone and heirloom pieces

9K gold: affordable and tough

9K gold contains 37.5% pure gold. Because it has more alloy, it is harder and resists scratches and bending well. It is the most budget-friendly way to own real diamond jewellery in hallmarked gold.

Keep in mind: the colour is paler than higher karats, and because there is less pure gold, the metal value of the piece is lower. People with very sensitive skin should also check with us before buying, as higher alloy content can occasionally cause irritation.

14K gold: the everyday sweet spot

14K gold contains 58.5% pure gold. It has a warm, attractive yellow colour and is strong enough for rings you wear every single day, through work, travel and housework. For most customers buying a daily-wear diamond ring, 14K is the best balance of beauty, strength and price.

18K gold: richest colour, most gold

18K gold contains 75% pure gold, which gives it that deep, luxurious yellow that many Indian buyers love. It also has the highest gold value of the three, which matters if you think about exchange value in the future.

Keep in mind: 18K is softer than 9K and 14K, so a ring worn daily may show small scratches sooner. This is normal and can be polished away. For nose pins, which face very little impact, 18K is an excellent choice.

Which karat should you choose?

Always check the BIS hallmark

Whichever karat you choose, make sure your gold is BIS hallmarked. A BIS hallmark has three parts:

  1. The BIS logo
  2. The purity grade, for example 18K750, 14K585 or 9K375
  3. A unique six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code

You can verify the HUID using the official BIS CARE app. All Saiji Diamond jewellery is made in BIS hallmarked gold, so the purity you pay for is the purity you get.

Frequently asked questions

Is 9K gold real gold?

Yes. 9K is real gold alloy containing 37.5% pure gold, and it can be BIS hallmarked like 14K and 18K.

Does the diamond look different in 9K, 14K or 18K gold?

The diamond itself is the same. The setting colour changes slightly, with 18K looking the warmest and richest.

Which gold is best for daily wear?

14K is the most popular choice because it balances colour, strength and price. 9K is even tougher and more affordable.
